Spotlight on Zimbabwean Stone Sculptors
Zimbabwe is home to one of the most admired art movements in Africa: Shona stone sculpture. Known worldwide for their expressive detail, these works are carved from hard stones like serpentine, springstone, and verdite.
We spoke with several artisans whose works are featured at Simply African Crafts.
“Stone is alive,” shares Tendai, a sculptor from Harare. “When I carve, I listen to the stone. It already has a spirit—I just reveal it.”
From powerful animal figures to graceful human forms, Zimbabwean stone sculptures symbolize resilience, beauty, and identity. Each sculpture is one of a kind, shaped by hand and inspired by heritage.
These artisans continue a legacy dating back thousands of years, while also gaining global recognition for their craft. By bringing their work to Simply African Crafts, we connect their artistry to collectors and admirers worldwide.
